Spanish residence permits
Spain non-lucrative visa
Live in Spain on your own financial means without working. 2026 requirements, financial means, health insurance and renewals — explained for applicants from the US and Canada.
Residency
Live in Spain, at your own pace
The non-lucrative visa lets you live in Spain without working, supported by your own financial means: pensions, rental income, savings or investments. It is one of the most popular routes for retirees and people with passive income from the United States and Canada.
As a rule, you apply at the Spanish consulate with jurisdiction over your place of residence. We help you prepare the file and document your financial means as solidly as possible.

Requirements
What you need to show
- Sufficient financial means: 400% of the Spanish IPREM index per month for the main applicant, plus 100% per family member. With the 2026 IPREM (€600/month), that is about €2,400 per month (€28,800 per year), plus €600 per family member.
- Health insurance with full coverage in Spain; in practice, consulates require policies with no co-payments or waiting periods.
- A clean criminal record in the countries where you have lived over the past five years.
- No work or professional activity in Spain — including remote work.
- A valid passport and any documents the consulate requires, such as a medical certificate.
IPREM is updated in Spain’s national budget and some consulates calculate it differently. We confirm the exact amount for your consulate before you apply.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered
Can I work remotely on a non-lucrative visa?
No. This permit does not allow any work or professional activity. If you plan to keep working remotely for a company or clients outside Spain, the digital nomad visa is the right route.
What do I need to renew it?
You must have actually lived in Spain for more than 183 days per year, keep your financial means and health insurance, and enroll any school-age children. Each renewal is valid for two years.
Will I become a Spanish tax resident?
Living in Spain for more than 183 days a year usually makes you a Spanish tax resident. US citizens also remain subject to US tax rules, so plan your move with a cross-border tax advisor.
